Centrifugal casting
Centrifugal casting allows us to produce rolls made from two different materials – one of which forms the surface part of the barrel that is wear and heat resistant while the other makes up the core with good mechanical resistance. In all, the Akers Group operates five centrifugal casters.

To centrifugally cast a roll, a mould is first assembled from several sections that are prepared with a sand filling and an internal coating. The primary metal, which will form the barrel, is poured into the mould as the machine turns at high speed, around 600 rpm, creating a centrifugal force of more than 100 G.

Once the primary metal has solidified, the secondary metal is then added using a precise method to assure a good bond with the primary metal. As this happens, the rotational speed is progressively reduced.
